Sky Diving Mama

Just as I did a few years ago, my sister celebrated her big 30th with a birthday morning skydive. My 50-something Mom decided to take the opportunity to put a check mark on her bucket list and did a skydive with my sister. Yes, my Mom went skydiving.....and she absolutely LOVED IT! I think she is already trying to figure out when she can go again.

My Mom's new boss was so impressed with her adventure that he told everyone he could "Guess what this Grandma-to-be is doing this weekend.....SKYDIVING!!!!"

I am super proud of my Sister and my Mom for doing such a cool thing. If it weren't for my "condition" I would have absolutely been there diving with them. In fact, I definitely plan to do another skydive during my 40th birthday trip in H-A-W-A-I-I!!! Who's with me?!?!?

This is a picture of my Mom coming down from her "high"

Actually, neither she nor my Sister came down from their adrenaline highs until late that night. :-)

Here's to being 'owned'

Welcome to my first posting... Fancy Girl has been after me to post something since we announced the pregnancy. I have postponed until I had something funny, thought-provoking, or at least mildly interesting to say. Given how long it's been I'm obviously not that creative.

This is not that post. ;) I will endeavor to participate going forward. No promises though.

I had to post this...
I had this video sent to me and, to quote Fancy Girl, OMG!!! I have much more to prepare for than I can possibly manage. I feel ready for the time suck, the hard talks, the inevitable conflict, etc. But how can I guy possibly prepare for something like this?! Every woman I know says our little girl will 'own' me. If this is being 'owned' I guess I can easily man-up and be owned.

Note to all the Non-Pregnant Women out there:

I found the funniest article today on a blog a read every day, and I feel overwhelmingly compelled to include it on mine. It looks like the blogger found it on Facebook....but I think it's actually been around for a while now.

Dear Non-Pregnant Person,

I hope you find these guidelines helpful in your interactions with pregnant women, as failing to follow them may result in serious physical harm. If you are thinking, surely she doesn’t mean me - then you should probably read this twice.

1. The appropriate response to a couple telling you they are having a baby is ‘Congratulations!’ with enthusiasm. Any other response makes you a jerk.

2. Through the wonders of science, we now know that babies are made ONLY by the mother and father - not grandparents. Unless the baby is in your uterus or you are the man that helped put it there, you may not ever use the phrase ‘my baby’.

3. On the same note, unless you made the baby as defined in 2, the pregnancy, birth, and raising of the child are not about you. You do not have input. No one wants to hear your opinion unless they ask for it…

4. The body of a pregnant woman should be treated the same as any other body. You would not randomly touch someone’s stomach if they were not pregnant, nor would you inquire into the condition of their uterus, cervix, or how they plan to use their breasts. Pregnancy does not remove all traces of privacy from a woman.

5. Likewise, no woman wants to hear comments on her weight…ever. A pregnant woman does not find it flattering that you think she is about is pop, must be having twins, looks swollen or has gained weight in her face. Telling her she looks too small only makes her worry that she is somehow starving her baby. Making such comments invite her to critique your physical appearance and you may not act offended. The only acceptable comment on appearance is ‘You look fabulous!’.

6. By the time we are 20-30 years old, most of us have picked up on the fact that the summer is hot. We are hot every summer when we are not pregnant. We don’t need you to point out that we will be miserably hot before the baby comes. Nor do we need to know how badly you will feel for us because we will be pregnant during the summer and how glad you are that YOU will not be pregnant this coming summer.

7. There is a reason that tickets to Labor & Delivery are not yet sold on Ticketmaster. Childbirth is actually not a public event. It may sound crazy, but some women really do not relish the idea of their mother, MIL, or a host of other family members seeing their bare butt and genitals. Also, some people simply feel like the birth of their child is a private and emotional moment to be shared only by the parents. You weren’t invited to be there when the baby was created, you probably won’t be invited to be there when it comes out either.

8. Like everything else in life, unless you receive an invitation, you are NOT invited. This includes doctor appointments, ultrasounds, labor, delivery, the hospital, and the parent’s home. You do not decide if you will be there for the birth or if you will move in with the new parents to ‘help out’. If your assistance is desired, rest assured that you will be asked for it.

9. If you are asked to help after the birth, this means you should clean up the house, help with cooking meals, and generally stay out of the way. Holding the baby more than the parents, interfering with breastfeeding and sleeping schedules, and making a woman who is still leaking fluid from multiple locations lift a finger in housework is not helping.

10. The only people entitled to time with the baby are the parents. Whether they choose to have you at the hospital for the birth or ask for you to wait three weeks to visit, appreciate that you are being given the privilege of seeing their child. Complaining or showing disappointment only encourages the parents to include you less.

Sincerely,

All the Pregnant Women in the World

Week Twenty: The halfway point

http://www.baby2see.com/development/week20.html

You are halfway through your pregnancy, 20 weeks marks the midpoint. Remember, pregnancy is counted as 40 weeks from the beginning of your last period if you go full term.

You are 20 weeks pregnant. (fetal age 18 weeks)
  • Baby now weighes about 11 ounces and is roughly 7 inches long.
  • Baby is 17cm long crown to rump, and weighs about 310 grams.
  • The baby can hear and recognize the mother's voice.
  • The mother will probably start feeling the first fetal movements.
  • The toenails and fingernails are growing.
  • The growth of hair on the rest of the body has started.
  • The skin is getting thicker.
  • The heart can now be heard with a stethoscope.
Your baby may react to loud sounds. Baby can actually hear noises outside of the womb. Familiar voices, music, and sounds that baby becomes accustomed to during their development stages often are calming after birth. This is an important time for sensory development since nerve cells serving each of the senses; taste, smell, hearing, sight, and touch are now developing into their specialized area of the brain.

20 weeksYour baby now weighes about 11 ounces and at roughly 7 inches long they are filling up more and more of the womb. Though still small and fragile, the baby is growing rapidly and could possibly survive if born at this stage.

NoteNote: Babies are measured from the crown (or top) of the head to the rump (or bottom) until about 20 weeks. After that, they are measured from head to heel. This is because a baby's legs are curled up against the torso during the first half of pregnancy and very hard to measure.

Weight: 10.6 ounces - 300 grams
Length: (crown to rump) 6.5 inches - 16.5 cm
(crown to heel) 10 inches - 25.5 cm

.....making progress

Once we knew we had to turn one room into the baby's room, we were unsure what to do about an office space and a guest room.
Bobby works from home occasionally now, and would like to do so more in the future. However, leaning over the laptop in front of the big screen TV isn't completely conducive to real productivity. So a real working office was high on the wish list.
However, neither of us liked the idea of not having a guest room. When Bobby's Mom comes for a visit it is usually for a few days or longer, and we want to have a nice place for her to stay. My Mom also stays over sometimes and that will probably happen more often when we want her help with the baby.
Of course we couldn't forget about my girlfriend G....since she actually does stay in the guest room the most. She loves to stay over after a night of girl time, but I'm not sure how often she'll want to stay if there is a crying baby waking her up from her beauty sleep every few hours....

So while Bobby and I were perusing through a Home Expo last October, we stumbled upon the answer we were looking for at the More Space Place exhibit. A MURPHY BED!!!
It was actually a longer process than we were expecting.
  • First a design rep from the store came to our house to take measurements of the room. While there she did a computer drawing of the room with different options for bed cabinet, desk, and storage. We finalized what we wanted and what would work best in that room.
  • Next we went to the store and pick style, color, hardware, and counter top.
  • Then we made the big payment and they special ordered our furniture.
  • It took about 6-8 weeks for the furniture to come in.
  • Last week we had the installer at our house for 3 full days installing the custom furniture.
For the last several days we've been moving the office stuff in and organizing the new space.

I am very happy to say that we now have a fully functional Office / Guestroom....

HOORAY!!! 20 WEEKS!!!!!

I am super excited to be at the halfway point!!!
My weekly baby growth email came yesterday and it said that Punkin' is now the size of a Cantaloupe.
Well, it just so happens that I picked up a Cantaloupe at the grocery store on Sunday... So last night Bobby took a picture of my belly and the Cantaloupe.

(I hope this doesn't turn anyone off of eating Cantelopes!!!)

NEVER BEFORE SEEN IN PUBLIC - BELLY PIC!!!

In Other Big News....
I did feel the baby move yesterday...several times!!! It was like little, light nudges from the inside out. Almost like you can feel your pulse in your neck, but much more random.

I think I actually felt her move for the first time after a nap on Saturday, but I wasn't totally sure. I am almost positive now that what I felt on Saturday was the baby move...and sure that is what I was feeling yesterday. I guess she was giving me a little "Happy 20 Weeks" present.

Floating Baby

So if you are like my friend Madison, and think the Floating Baby on the left side of my blog is CREEPY....Check This Out:
When I showed it to Madison her response was: "Hell to the no! Oh dear sweet baby Jesus, please don't consider getting this tank top, lol. I wouldn't be able to walk next to you without laughing my butt off!" (I can always count on her to tell me exactly what she thinks!)

What is funny is that she actually has to wonder if I'd wear that shirt.....

CostCo Freaks and Good Luck at Stein Mart

I went to CostCo during my lunch break today to order a cake for my sister's upcoming birthday party....

I wasn't really wanting to make the trip if I could just call in and place my order. So this morning I looked all over CostCo's website looking for their decorated cake options. (I had stopped by the bakery once before so I knew the selection was very limited.)
I found nothing on the company website about their decorated bakery cakes. So I googled "CostCo Cakes" and this is how I found all the information I needed.

Can you believe there are blogs dedicated to all things "CostCo"? I found several blogs by people just crazy about CostCo. One of the blogs even had the CostCo Cake Order Form available, so I was able to print it out before my lunchtime trip. I was pretty happy about that.
So if you are curious to see if I am full of crap...here are a few of the ones I stumbled upon:
http://addictedtocostco.com/2009/02/03/costco-bakery-makes-an-excellent-cake/
http://costcocakes.blogspot.com/
http://www.costcob.com/

Anyway, since I was in & out of CostCo in a flash I stopped in next door at Stein Mart. I was wondering what my chances were of finding a little black sweater to wear over my sleeveless dress at dinner tonight. (Restaurants in Austin are always so freaking cold.)
I was hoping to find something thin like both G & K had during our outdoor lunch on Sunday. I know I wasn't really asking for much...a thin, plain, black sweater. But still, I never find what I'm looking for if it's something specific...
The retail gods were with me today!!! I found exactly what I was looking for and it's going to work perfectly for dinner with the girls tonight, as well as many more times in the future. YEA!

ROCKABYE BABY!

I was shopping with my sister and mom last weekend and we happened upon some CDs for baby.
They are called Rockabye Baby! and here is the online description:
Rockabye Baby! transforms timeless rock songs into beautiful instrumental lullabies. Guitars and drums are traded for soothing mellotrons, vibraphones and bells, and the volume is turned down from an eleven to a two. Rockabye Baby! is the perfect way to share the music you love with the littlest rocker in your life.

My sister decided her niece needs the Bob Marley one and purchased it immediately.

While browsing on a baby site today, I was reminded about these CDs so I went to the website to check out what other artists they offer. Lo and Behold! ......I may just have to get this one: NO DOUBT
There are so many great artists available...But it seems crazy that some of these band's songs were turned into lullabys for babies!!!
Check out the list:
The Beatles
Beach Boys
Bob Marley
Bjork
Coldplay
The Cure
The Eagles
Green Day
Led Zeppelin
Metallica
No Doubt
Nine Inch Nails
U2
Nirvana
Pink Floyd
Pixies
Queens of the Stone Age
Radiohead
The Ramones
The Rolling Stones
Smashing Pumpkins
Tool
Christmas Rock Classics

WEEK 19....and we have a Pediatrician

I'm at 19 Weeks today.....YEA! Just one week away from the 1/2 way point. :-)

And yes, we have already picked a pediatrician. Both Bobby and I are serious planners and organizers, so we are pretty much ahead on everything in this baby process so far. We are totally ok with that.

Last night we attended a "Meet the Pediatrician" at the Seton Southwest Plaza. A neighbor friend of ours referred us to this practice because that is where she takes her son. We were excited about it being so close to our house and not way up north somewhere.
We met 3 of the 4 Pediatricians in the practice and both of us really liked one of them especially. All we have to do is give her name to our OB, and get in to see her a couple of days after the baby is born for the first appointment.
We are both happy with this choice and not looking any further. Mark it off the list!!!!

Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you. - Dr. Seuss

It's official.........
Punkin' will be dreaming in Dr. Seuss world.
I made the 1st purchases this weekend....the crib bedding and a really cool touch lamp with the red lamp shade (shown):

The baby furniture will be delivered late this week.
My dad is coming to town next weekend for my sister's birthday but will be staying with us....and I have projects for him. :-)
He and Bobby are going to get to put the nursery furniture together and stain a bookshelf to match the nursery furniture. Good thing it's a long weekend....I think they'll need it! ;-)

    SWINE FLU TIP

    DON'T DO THIS!!!!!

    Sympathy-Pregnancy Dream

In all my pregnancy books, blogs and websites I have read that wacked-out dreams are just a normal side effect of being prego. It's true; I have had some strange, vivid dreams that mostly don't make any sense. But some of them make total sense and are even a little steamy!!!

This morning Bobby told me about a dream he had last night that I found humorous. He dreamed that he he was planning out all the summer camps our daughter would attend through the age of 12.
He listed a few of them:
    • Fun, swimming camp
    • Music camp
    • Outdoorsy camp
    • Money camp - he explained that at this camp she would learn how to balance a checkbook and understand the ins and outs of compound interest.
So not only is Bobby doing the sympathy weight gain with me, he's also having the sympathy prego dreams with me. What a guy! :-)
